The Perfect Scoop

Here goes, my first food blog! I thought it'd be fitting that I write about my favorite food-related topic: Jeni's Ice Creams.

People who know me know I love Jeni's Ice Creams in Columbus, OH. (Yes, that is a picture of Jeni's ice cream in the title bar.) In fact, some call it an obsession; I call it my only vice. ;) Anyway, the only way I get Jeni's these days is through mail order, which isn't helping either my wallet or my waistline, but hey, life is too short to worry about such trivial things! Actually, it is possible to make your own Jeni's ice cream (see recipes here from Food & Wine magazine). But alas, I don't have the right tool (yet) to embark on such an endeavor, so it's mail order for me.

Anyway, on Thursday I received my second Jeni's order of 2009, which consisted of three pints of Coconut Rum, two pints each of Hot Cocoa by the Hearth and Pistachio and Honey, and one pint each of Thai Chili (my all-time favorite) and Savannah Buttermint. I was particularly excited about the Coconut Rum (a brand new flavor); if I'm obsessed with Jeni's, I'm even more obsessed with coconut! And boy, is it gooood! I'm enjoying a scoop as I write this. Creamy, not too sweet, with chewy toasted coconut bits (though, being the coconut freak that I am, I personally could've used even more coconut flavor!), and just enough of a hint of rum that you could taste it's there, but it's not overbearing. I'm not a huge alcohol fan (being a supertaster will do that to ya!), so I was initially a bit leery of the "rum" aspect of the ice cream, but they really hit the home run with just the right amount of it (in my opinion anyway). I'm glad I ordered three pints, but I almost wish I had ordered more!

Well, the perfect companion to the perfect ice cream, in my opinion, is the perfect ice cream scoop. R. was the one who introduced me to the Good Cook Smart Scoop ice cream scoop, and it is the best ice cream scoop I've ever used. It's scoops ice cream into perfect little balls and the ice cream dispenses easily (i.e., it doesn't stick to the scoop). I like it so much I bought three, and they come in real handy when I host one of my Jeni's Ice Cream parties! The only issues with them, in my experience, is that they are pretty hard to find in stores (I got mine on eBay) and they have to be hand washed. Well, you could throw them into the dishwasher, but doing so will cause the nonstick coating to come off. (Believe me, I learned it the hard way.) There's a reason why it says "HAND WASH ONLY" right on the scoop. Duh.

Well, that just about concludes my first blog on here. (Thanks, Sam, for suggesting that part of this blog be devoted to Jeni's! This one is for you!) I did A LOT of cooking this weekend, trying new recipes and digging out old ones, so I imagine I'll be posting again here very soon. Stay tuned!
